Historically, disability has been mistakenly described by many as an unfavorable health outcome, rather than a lifestyle for millions of Americans. People with disabilities should be viewed as a community of people who share a unique culture and collective lived experiences. Individuals with disabilities are not destined for a life of poor health status by way of their disability rather, it is the lack of institutional support for this underserved population that is contributing to poor health outcomes. People living with disability are less likely to find employment. In a study 9 years ago from the Labor Bureau, it was discovered that only 17.1% of individuals with a disability are employed. People living with disability are also victimized at higher rates than those without a disability.
